One of my favorite genres is open world action RPG.  Having the ability to go anywhere in an open world and make decisions that fit your play style is very appealing to me.  As I sat down at E3 to see footage from Elex, I came away very impressed with a game that fits the action RPG genre perfectly.

Elex is a sci-fi/fantasy game that is set on the planet Magalan.  A meteor hits the planet, causing those who survived to battle to survive  At the center of this fight is the element “Elex”.  A precious, limited resource that arrived with the meteor, Elex can power machines, open the door to magic, or re-sculpt life into new, different forms.  The question is, can technology or magic save this world? Or will this new power destroy all those left alive amongst the ruins?

Elex is very interesting because it is a mix of fantasy and futuristic technology.  You can join one of a number of factions, each with different strengths in magic, crafting, and weaponry.  For example, the Clerics are more prominate in magic.  The Beserkers use bows and other types of medival weaponry.  The Albs use technology to achieve their goals.  Depending on the faction you choose, you will have a number of different types of armor and weapons at your disposal.  And don’t worry, you won’t get overencumbered with items, so have fun collecting!  Also, keep in mind that you need to choose your faction carefully, because the faction you choose is the one you are stuck with all game.

Combat looks pretty straight forward, especially if you have played action RPGs before.  You will have skills that you can level up, which helps you defeat all kinds of enemies.  Leveling up is important because enemies do not scale, so you need to level up to defeat some of the more powerful enemies.  You have a jetpack that you can use to help you.  There are no mounts in the game, so get used to walking and using the jetpack.

There are some things that I really like about Elex.  First, the game will be seamless, meaning there are NO LOADING SCREENS!!!  I don’t know how they can pull this off, but I’m excited to see that feature.  This is pretty astounding, especially if you consider how big the map is.  It takes approx. 40 minutes to run from one side of the map to another.  Another thing I like is the amount of content.  The game will take roughly 80 hours to complete if you do all main and side missions.  Also, Elex will have AI that remember your actions and conversations, and these things may impact the game.

I’m excited for Elex to be released!  Having a huge open world action RPG with no loading screens is fantastic and I can’t wait to fight and explore Magalan.  The game will be released sometime in August 2017, so we don’t have to wait too long to play.  It will be available on PC, Xbox One, and Playstation 4.  While we wait for the release, check out the awesome footage from Elex!
