Have you ever watched any of the Jurassic Park movies and thought to yourself, “Wow, I wish there was a real place like that in existence?”. With PlaystationVR, the creators of Robinson: The Journey have gone above and beyond to create exactly that for us as gamers venturing into the new world of Virtual Reality.  Robinson brings the idea of true world exploration to life with stunning graphics, and an immersive world that at times literally left me with my jaw dropped to the floor in complete amazement.

To give a brief story explanation without giving anything away, When the Esmeralda crashes on Tyson III, a boy named Robin is left stranded. He must rely on his wits – and HIGS, an AI unit from the ship – to survive. As he searches for the lost crew and comes face-to-face with dinosaurs, Robin discovers that Tyson III is not the paradise once promised.

One of my favorite parts I would have to say is being forced out of your comfort zone and right into the middle of a group of curious velociraptors that you must plan your timing with to sneak around them versus your other option of offering yourself to them as their evening snack. At that moment in time I felt like I was reliving that scene from Jurassic World as Chris Pratt goes into the raptor whisperer mode…

Outside of the normal storyline itself, There is a library better known as the infotarium that holds all the planet’s information about animals and other HIG Units that are in need of scanning to help develop the story as you progress and explain what exactly happened. Through the ability of your scan tool, you must scan all the creatures on the planet in order to collect information on them via an almost connect the dots like interface that will leave some of the bigger dinosaurs and animals pretty challenging to scan given their massive size. Another great addition to the challenges that await you in Robinson: The Journey, are the puzzles themselves. Throughout the game you will need to work with your HIGS Unit to solve and provide power across the grids in a fun top down 3D map of the world in order to get machines and other objects working again.

Crytek and Robinson have also tied in an achievement system into the game. This leaves the ability to explore more when you are done with the main story line to be able to run through and unlock them all for those gamers out there that are the 100% completion type. The world itself that was created with Tyson III, makes it fun to even just walk around and enjoy the scenery if nothing else. Despite the overall short gameplay in regards to hours which was a little disappointing, this games expansive atmosphere, stunning graphics, and immersive experience I feel make it a solid pickup for anyones PSVR setup.
